A reburial ceremony was held in France for the remains of six Scottish soldiers who died over a century ago during World War I. Specialists from the British Ministry of Defence responsible for searching and identifying servicemen (MOD War Detectives) conducted DNA analysis, which made it possible to identify two of the fallen. The identities of the remaining four soldiers could not be established, but specialists were able to determine their regimental affiliation: one of them served in the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, and three others presumably belonged to the Gordon Highlanders. The reburial ceremony took place with full military honours 108 years after the soldiers' death, which became possible thanks to modern methods of historical and genetic examination. Such discoveries regularly occur on the former battlefields of World War I in France and Belgium, where remains of fallen servicemen continue to be found. The work of MOD War Detectives is aimed at establishing the identities of as many missing soldiers as possible and ensuring them a dignified burial with respect for military traditions.
