The European Commission presented a joint communication titled "European Northern Neighbourhood: A New Strategy for the Arctic." The document was adopted by the College of Commissioners and presented by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas together with the Commissioner for International Partnerships Jaan Sicks at a plenary session in Strasbourg. The new strategy is intended to strengthen the European Union's role in the Arctic region amid growing geopolitical significance of the North. The statement emphasizes the need to account for climate change, the development of transport routes, and intensifying competition among world powers for influence in the Arctic. The document covers several key areas: strengthening economic ties with northern partners, developing sustainable infrastructure, ensuring security, and protecting the environment. Particular attention is given to cooperation with states and territories that are part of what is called Europe's Northern Neighbourhood. Representatives of the European Commission noted that the strategy was developed with the interests of indigenous peoples of the region in mind and is aimed at promoting the green transition. The initiative is also viewed as part of the EU's broader foreign policy line to strengthen its presence in strategically important regions of the world. The document is expected to serve as a foundation for further diplomatic and economic initiatives by the European Union in the Arctic direction in the coming years.
