As part of preparation for the Artemis II mission, the crew practiced procedures for observing the lunar surface. A screenshot from a tablet belonging to one of the crew members, taken on April 6, 2026, shows a visualization of the dark disk of the Moon blocking the Sun, with handwritten annotations. NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman and Victor "Ike" Glover, as well as Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen, noted flashes from impacts and their locations on the lunar surface. Different colors—blue, green, and red—indicated observations made by each crew member. Artemis II will be the first crewed mission of the Artemis program, during which the crew will orbit the Moon without landing on its surface. Training in visual observation and documentation of lunar phenomena is an important part of preparing astronauts for extended flights to deep space. Such exercises help the crew develop coordination skills and precise data recording under conditions approximating the real mission environment.
