The Panamax 2026 exercises, which concluded in mid-August, demonstrated the potential of new technologies in ensuring maritime security. The U.S. Navy deployed unmanned surface vessels (USVs) Corsair, designed for patrolling coastal waters and monitoring the maritime situation. Following the exercises, representatives of Panama's military and security leadership expressed satisfaction with the results of using autonomous patrol vessels. It is noted that such systems can significantly expand patrolling capabilities without requiring constant crew presence on board, thereby reducing risks to personnel and enabling extended surveillance over prolonged periods. Panamax is a regular multinational military exercise in which the armed forces of the United States, Panama, and other regional countries traditionally participate. The main objective of the maneuvers is to practice joint actions to protect the Panama Canal and adjacent maritime territories from various threats, including illegal drug trafficking, smuggling, and potential attacks. The use of unmanned maritime systems such as Corsair is viewed as part of a broader strategy for modernizing the U.S. Navy and its partners' naval forces in Latin America. Such vessels are equipped with sensors and communication systems that enable real-time data transmission to command centers, enhancing situational awareness during patrols of strategically important waterways. Positive feedback from Panamanian authorities may facilitate further expansion of cooperation between the countries in the use of autonomous marine technologies for protecting regional waters.
