At the 2026 Warsaw Conference on the Human Dimension of the OSCE, British representative Ambassador Neil Holland delivered a national statement dedicated to media freedom in the OSCE region. In his address, he called on all participating states of the organization to fulfill their obligations to protect the rights of journalists and ensure media independence. Special attention in his speech was devoted to the situation of journalists detained in Russia. Holland demanded their immediate release, emphasizing that the persecution of media workers contradicts the principles enshrined in the OSCE's founding documents. The British representative noted that freedom of the press is one of the key elements of the human dimension of security, alongside the protection of human rights and democratic institutions. According to him, OSCE participating states are obliged not only to refrain from pressuring journalists, but also to actively create conditions for their safe professional activities. The Warsaw Conference on the Human Dimension traditionally brings together representatives of OSCE participating states, civil society, and international organizations to discuss issues of human rights, democracy, and the rule of law. The question of media freedom remains one of the most discussed topics at such forums, particularly in the context of continuing pressure on independent journalism in a number of countries in the region.
