The European Commission in Brussels has presented a new strategic document 'Vision 2040 for Fisheries and Aquaculture', which includes an updated EU strategy for fisheries and aquaculture through 2040. The initiative was announced by Executive Vice-President of the European Commission Raffaele Fitto and Commissioner for Environment, Water Resources and Fisheries Costas Kadis. In his remarks, Fitto emphasized the importance of developing a long-term perspective for the sector, which plays a significant role in food security and the economy of coastal regions of the European Union. The document is intended to ensure sustainable development of the industry taking into account environmental, economic and social factors. The strategy is aimed at supporting both traditional fisheries and aquaculture — the farming of fish and seafood under controlled conditions. It is expected that the implementation of 'Vision 2040' will help strengthen the competitiveness of European producers on the global market, while reducing pressure on marine ecosystems. Representatives of the European Commission noted that the new strategy was developed taking into account consultations with industry associations, scientists and representatives of EU member states. The document also takes into account challenges related to climate change, which are already affecting fish stocks and working conditions in the maritime industry. Details of the strategy's implementation, including specific support and financing measures, are expected to be presented in subsequent official documents of the European Commission.
