Members of the Committee on Radioactive Waste Management (CoRWM) recently visited two key facilities in Sweden related to radioactive material storage — Forsmark and Clab. Clab is a central repository for spent nuclear fuel, while Forsmark is a site that houses both an operating nuclear power plant and facilities for long-term storage of radioactive waste. During the visit, the delegation familiarized itself with technologies and approaches used in Sweden for safe radioactive waste management, including methods for their transportation, storage, and preparation for final disposal. Sweden is considered one of the leading countries in this field due to its extensive experience in developing and implementing deep geological disposal technologies. The CoRWM trip is part of broader international practice of exchanging expertise between countries developing their own radioactive waste management programs. Such visits allow specialists to evaluate the effectiveness of various technical solutions and organizational approaches, as well as to consider foreign experience when developing national strategies. The Committee is responsible for developing recommendations on long-term radioactive waste management and advises relevant agencies on this issue. The visit to Sweden is viewed as part of ongoing work to study advanced international practices that may be useful in shaping policy in this area.
