On October 29, NASA published an official Request for Information (RFI) addressed to commercial companies operating in the space technology sector. The purpose of the request is to obtain information about the current capabilities of the industry for servicing spacecraft directly in orbit with regard to the Hubble space telescope. The Hubble telescope, launched in 1990, remains one of the most important tools for astronomical observation despite its considerable age. Over decades of operation, the spacecraft has been serviced multiple times by astronauts during Space Shuttle missions; however, following the completion of the Space Shuttle program, such servicing became impossible through traditional means. The information request is aimed at exploring what solutions private companies can offer—from refueling and orbital correction to more complex repair operations. This aligns with NASA's overall trend of engaging the commercial sector in tasks that were previously handled exclusively by government programs. The responses received from industry will help the agency assess the technical feasibility and economic viability of such servicing, as well as determine how much modern technologies can extend the telescope's service life and preserve its scientific value for future space exploration research.
