NASA announced the completion of the next phase of the Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog (CHAPEA) project — a long-term experiment simulating the conditions of human presence on Mars. Four participants spent more than a year in an isolated environment reproducing the constraints of a Mars mission: confined space, artificial habitat, and strict resource management. On October 31, 2026, the simulation ended, and the crew stepped outdoors for the first time in a long while, capturing the moment in a joint photograph. The CHAPEA project is aimed at studying the physical and psychological condition of people under conditions approximating a real Mars expedition, including research on diet, stress levels, work performance, and team interaction. The data obtained will help NASA prepare for possible future crewed flights to Mars, which require solving numerous technical and medical tasks related to prolonged crew isolation. Experiments of this kind are considered an important element in preparing space agencies for exploration of deep space.
