European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen made a tour of the Western Balkans countries—already the sixth such visit in recent years. During her visit, she reaffirmed the European Union's commitment to the course of expansion and further integration of the region into European structures. Von der Leyen noted that EU expansion represents a "two-way process," in which candidate countries must continue their reforms, while the European Union itself must demonstrate real willingness to accept new members. According to her, the success of European integration depends on mutual commitments from both sides. The visit took place amid ongoing discussions about the pace of EU expansion and the readiness of Western Balkans countries to meet the necessary criteria—from rule of law to economic reforms. The European Commission has repeatedly stated the strategic importance of the region for the stability and security of the entire continent. The trip was part of Brussels' consistent policy of strengthening ties with countries in the region, which have long sought EU membership. Von der Leyen stressed that the European Commission intends to continue supporting these countries on their reform path, while urging them to accelerate progress in key areas.
