The European Commission has released new Eurobarometer survey data timed to World Ecolabelling Day, observed on October 8, 2026. According to the study results, the level of trust among European consumers in the EU Ecolabel has increased noticeably compared to previous measurements. There is also a noted increase in awareness of this marking among citizens of EU member states. Experts at the Commission link this trend to growing consumer interest in eco-friendly and sustainable products. More and more people in the EU are paying attention to the environmental impact of products when making purchases and are showing a preference for items with confirmed environmental certification. EU Ecolabel is the official eco-quality mark of the European Union, awarded to goods and services that meet strict environmental criteria throughout their entire life cycle — from production to disposal. The system has been in operation for several decades and covers a wide range of product categories, including household chemicals, textiles, cosmetics, and accommodation services. Representatives of the European Commission emphasized that the growing trust in the marking demonstrates the success of EU policy in promoting sustainable consumption and informing citizens about the possibilities of environmentally responsible choices. The publication of the survey results is intended to draw attention to the importance of independent environmental certification in the context of an increasing number of unverified or misleading claims by companies about the eco-friendliness of their products ("greenwashing"). The Commission intends to continue working to expand the use of the EU Ecolabel and increase consumer awareness of its significance.
